Wish I had been awake to the fact that this drive opened up to those with over 5 drives! Got back from work yesterday and ended up going for a solo drive myself. Though being a Friday you never really are solo as parts of the desert are like the SZR. Quiet a few cars stuck and needing assistance as most seemed to overload their 4x4's and knew little about tyre pressure or any general knowledge of desert driving. I was kept busy helping out.
It seems Almost4x4 has acquired it's own resident photographer since Muhittin signed up to the club! Almost a guarantee now that all Newbie drives are covered well from behind the lens! Glad everyone seemed to have a good drive. Will keep my eyes reviewing further drives with more frequency so I don't miss out next time.

There is important information that everyone needs to know, it was stated by our father Abu Salem that the next Friday drive will be the last before Ramadam (Ramadan Mubarak to all) and this drive is for all newbies, after that in Ramadan we will have Big Iftar (break fast at sunset time). And this event to all the levels of the club members, all religions, all nationalities, and the drive to the breakfast bowl is vey easy. This is good news I liked to share it with you all, and our marshals shall add more details at the time of the event.
It was so nice drive, Led by Yoghybear. I was second car behind Yoghybear at the waiting area until I told margarita to come in front of me to have her in my video.
We started the drive, until I felt that my FJ Cruiser had few problems. I felt it heavy, very slow speed pick up, not matching the performance of Yoghybear Dodge and Margarita Jeep. I got stacked many times. Until Bu Salem told me to stay at the end of the convoy.
During the drive he advised me to check the tire pressure. Before the drive I set it to 9psi back 10psi front, during the drive It became 10psi back 11-12psi front so I re-adjusted it.
The car respond a bit better but not totally. I had to turn off my AC and I felt the car power was just perfect. Summary of the problem: BF Goodrich tires on FJ Cruiser on very soft sand is very bad combination. I will put them on sale and get Cooper H/T instead. Above that, 1 PSI makes huge difference, prove of what Yoghybear told us in the Desert First Contact trip.
Beside these problems, the drive was very fun specially in the bowls and at the end of the drive.
Thank you Bu Salem for the gift, thank you Adnan for the sweep. Thanks to all the team who given us the opportunity to join this drive.

This was a great drive lead by Yoghybear!
Early Breakfast (my first 5+ trip) was lead by Strawb and we were told that it was a little bit much for 5+ so i waited impatiently for this trip in order to compare....and it really was different! the technique in driving was pretty much the same but the actual track was a bit less aggressive.
I've learned that my JK on 12 PSI was great for 5- drives but now that we are getting into more advance tracks and drives....10 PSI is needed (yes, 2 PSI has a lot of impact and change - thank you Yoghy for that insight!)
While going around Yoghy Bowl - Al Shamsi was telling me through radio to floor it - step on it more - go faster - ENJOY THE JEEP!! and honestly it was scary as I felt I was already going too fast!!! I stepped on it a little more and enjoyed the G Force but then felt I needed to slow down in order not to fly as we were in the desert not the airport :p but it really was a great feeling, thank you Bu Salem!
I'm very happy with my current level of skills and building on them as much as i can and i am also greatly happy that I have begun the 5+ level
Unfortunately, next weekend is the last newbie trip as during Ramadan we will be on vacation - can't wait to come back though!

For me it was the 1st 'afternoon' drive with Almost, and I should say I liked it more than the regular morning drives. Yes, the weather is hotter when we start, but the sunset is amazing! Soon after we started driving Momo had to do a second try and the convoy was instructed to change the route due to very soft sand which even the Tornado found difficult. Since I kept the distance from Momo (good for me) all I had to do was to reverse a bit. However, at that point the convoy started to move in different directions (at least this is how I felt) and I found myself disconnected from the convoy and my position. The learning is to ask clearer instructions from the marshals if you're not sure where to go. From there on it went more or less smooth for me. I had to make one or two second-tries (surprisingly on an almost flat ground), and once again I have observed how much the distance to the car ahead of you matters. When Margarita got stuck in the arch I very well imagined how I could have made the situation worse if I were not to keep safe distance. The personal highlight for me was still the successful self-recovery - all thanks to the lesson from Armin in the previous trip. I did all exactly the same and managed to 'un-chain' myself in less than a minute. Armin, thanks again for the learning. We finished the drive at the sunset and I stayed on for almost an hour at Badayer shops chatting to Almosters. Thanks to all and special thanks to Bu Salem for the Almost gift!

Beat the Sunset – 5+ June 13th, 2014
Well Friday the 13th did not jinx our trip. I was the most challenging and awesome trip so far. Seems everyone in the group was able to self-recover (including myself a couple of times). I had a couple of extra passengers this time and I was worried about the extra weight, it was no problem. The Wrangler ate it up.
Rita had put new rims, rubber and suspension on her Wrangler. Looks great! Gets me thinking. She said it was a huge improvement.
Singh had an older Cherokee all tricked out. Good looking rig Singh! Best looking Cherokee I have ever seen from that era. I have one back home, but I left it with my son so I expect it is being maintained just as well as any vehicle given to the Son. Probably will have to do a “frame up” when I get back, if there is anything left of it.
This was my first ride with Yoghy in lead. Shamsi was sweeping with Adnan swooping back and forth keeping the middle of the convoy in check and helping everyone self-recover. He almost became a permanent part of Rita’s undercarriage on one recovery. Scary there for a moment, but he signaled that he was OK.
I learned, in this trip, that when Yoghy is driving the Dodge, he does not have air-conditioning and since the temperature at the start of the trip was 46 degrees, he uses speed to keep up the air flow in the cab. Thrilling!!! Each Lead Marshal has a different technique. Yoghy likes the inside crest of the dunes, crossing over on the opposite side. The sand, at the beginning of the trip was incredibly soft (fluffy) so it took a bit of getting used to. I needed every bit of instruction in my first 6 drives to handle the trail Friday.
We got to Iftar Bowl and spend a few minutes there comparing notes. From there we were off to Super Bowl. I came up into a bunch of other vehicles parked and running and I lost the convoy in the mix of vehicles. Called in for assistance and Yoghy came back to lead us through. Sorry Yoghy, I did not keep my distance correct. Lesson learned.
OK, now the most thrilling part of the drive. On the way to Super Bowl Yoghy brought us to a smaller bowl. This was my first run in a real bowl. Wow! Now that was fun. From where we entered the bowl I could not see the bowl, but listening to Shamsi’s instructions to the other drivers, I knew I had to gun it going in. So gunning it I looked left and all of a sudden I could see the whole bowl. It was HUGE! Oh Crap! I pushed the throttle all the way down, picked my line and to my amazement, the Wrangler just kept climbing and climbing. I arced and headed down then back up and out. I’ll tell you all, that was the most amazing 15 seconds of any drive so far. Thanks Yoghy.
When we arrived at (I think it was) Super Bowl there was a FJ trying to yard out a Wrangler who had a blown transmission. I felt for those guys. They are a long way from the tarmac and a lot of tough ground between here and there. Guess we have to take special care to keep our vehicles maintained in top condition all the time. Another lesson learned.
The Sr Marshals demonstrated running the bowl, amazing what experience does. Looking forward to learning all the lessons between 5+ and when we will be invited to run Super Bowl. We ganged up with the 5- convoy and made an uneventful trip back to the shops.

Thank you Mark , Mok , Muhittin ,...and all brothers and sisters for a very nice time we spent together. It's always pleasure to drive with all of you.

What I like to stress on that every newbie has to fully trust the senior marshal's instruction on every stuck or difficult situation as the marshal may has different point of view to assess and evaluate the case in term of engineering stability of the vehicle. Hence the marshal's instructions shall be adopted all the way as reiterated by Bu Salem and all trip leader before every drive.

I forgot to add one very important lesson learned which I hope everyone was able to see.....towards the end (the last bowl we stopped at) before moving all newbies in one convoy, there was an FJ coming down the hill while drifting sideways (back was swinging left and right) and coming extremely close with rollover!! at that time I was standing with Bu Salem, Yoghybear, and a few other members (advanced drivers and newbies) and that was when I could over hear the seniors talking about how bad of an example the driver is setting. That was also when Bu Salem explained why the skill is in coming down and not going up the hill
