an amazing drive! met at 3 p.m. and took an easy route towards badayer. very quickly this easy route started to become more and more challenging. for this trip the Marshalls decided on the buddy system or alternatively 50 dirhams if strawb and his team does the rescue or pop out respectively. apart from the loose flag, powerless power steering and a broken valve no major issues. very fast pace technical dunes and an amazing round in the iftar Bowl we headed to Super Bowl where Yogi Bear took me for a bumpy ride to climb almost to the highest part of the dune. my back is still hurting :) congratulations to my classmates I personally think you have all driven very very well and it's an honor to drive with you. Yoghy, Bu Salem and Armin did a great job watching us, leading, sweeping and rescuing - thank you very very much for this. hopefully see you in the sand next week have a great weekend fellow almosters...

Another great drive and challenge at the Almost4x4 club this afternoon. Having flown in from Brisbane this morning (14hr flight time covering 12'000km) I was told at home that I was crazy going off into the desert and to stay in and take it easy! Well, I knew every other one of the Newbie challengers were just as crazy and keen as me so I would be in good company for the afternoon!

Myself, Bambam, Drifter, Eric Hummer, Ginger, Oxana, Sacha and Taurus would be the challengers today. We meet at Nizwa shops at 1500 sharp (Swiss clocks don't wait for late comers!) and would chase the bear watched over by Bu Salem, Strawb and Armin. A warm up drive was undertaken from Nizwa to Al Badayer. As it was 38 degrees I was already warmed up so I can only guess our bear is from the Polar region!

From Al Badayer the pace as expected picked up fast. Eric was first to come undone in a small bowl but performed a very impressive self recovery so there was no hold up. The sand was very soft, softest of the year so far with the summer heat. Tyres were down just under 10psi to cope. The level of skill shown today and the pace of the convoy was great. That said, catching the bear was going to be tough. Strawb thought the task too hard, declared a fuel emergency and went home!

Next task as a team was to repair Sacha's flat tyre. Seems the rubber valve had enough of the heat and failed. A buddy system involving about 5 newbies managed to jack the car up and with the help of Bu Salem's spare valve collection we fixed the problem. Just to be sure Bu Salem used two valves.....a special technique I am sure!!

Oxana showed us how far the Pathfinder could tilt without rolling down a crest. Low ratio was selected (don't tell Caprihorse) and a boot load of power and level balance restored!

The main challenge for me was keeping correct distance at this quick pace. I found myself too close to the back of a large Hummer more than once. We passed Iftar bowl and arrived at Super Bowl faster than I would have imagined. Few hold ups and a great pace.

We never did catch the bear but had loads of fun trying. Thanks everyone for a great day!

Great drive yesterday. Very fast and only a few problems. My front right tire had a pop out resulting from a broken valve. That was corrected fast enough though and after the drive I was even able to recover the first replacement valve that got dropped inside my tire...Thank you Bu Salem:). Other then that only a couple stucks and second tries for the convoy. I have to say I like the afternoon drives this time of year as the temperature is fine at the end of the drive. Thanks to Yoghie for setting a great pace and track. While we didn't "catch the bear" I think we all help up our own end.

Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 It was a really fun afternoon with a great mix of small technical dunes and fast high dunes.
The convoy did very well and I believe we all enjoyed ourselves.

If we want to be self-critical of ourselves (in order to learn lessons) then I think it’s fair to say that on occasions some cars were driving too close to each other, particularly in the high dune section. This led to a couple of times when there were ‘second attempts’ but too many cars in the area to give the driver enough space.

Another improvement area would be the use of radios. Again I think it’s fair to say that we didn’t always follow the correct voice procedure. We all know that for example ‘stop stop’ isn’t helpful! When a driver needs to take a ‘second round’ it’s sometimes difficult to drive and speak at the same time, so it was useful to have other drivers informing everyone that ‘X is taking a second round’. However when the driver is clear, it’s helpful for them to then say ‘X I’m now clear’.

This really isn’t meant to sound like a list of complaints, just hopefully some helpful observations!

Incidentally Bambam you have to get the prize for the quickest time to write-up a trip report- I'm guessing you had to be still parked at Al Babayer when you wrote it !

A really big thank you to all the organisers.

Another great drive goes to my record; we all meet at 3pm at Nazwa shops and moved out at 3:30 pm going to Badayer.

Yogy brought us inside the desert heading to Badayer with just enough pace to warm up everyone for the real Bear hunt. As we past Badayer Yogy started to put some speed and the Bear hunt began.

We pass hi dunes and crest with speed, really loving the pace and tried to keep up the speed I tried to close the distance to often with the car in front of me and this end me up having the first stock, lesson learned that to close on hi dunes is not smart moved at all, no matter how you want to stay close to make the fast pace for the convoy sake but if you did not give your self a bit of space to make a momentum you will end up somehow stuck after passing the dunes and next to it was a ditch. As Abu salem state on the radio “ make sure to have a space when heading on Hi dunes” Copy that Bu Salem.

Thank you Armin for helping me out of the ditch.

After that stuck I keep a bit of distance as we head up hi dunes but not too far just making sure the fast pace still there so I wont bored the car behind me (Dave) I know you really want the catch the bear as much I do (lol)…

We have 1 pop out and second turns few times in this drive as well.. but I think that’s just a break everyone needed…

The drive continuous at hi speed everyone trying to catch the bear but this time the Bear was to fast and sneaky to be caught…Thanks Yogy for this wonderful, exhilarating Drive.

Most of us did not had a chance to be second lead due to some mechanical problem from one of the car so we had to end the drive by driving back to Badayer but from there was more than enough as I enjoyed every moment of it from start to finish.

Thank you Yogy, Busalem for organizing this trip and letting me be part of it and thanks to Armin and Strawb as well.

See you all next time…..

Another wonderful day with Almost 4x4 after a one month gap….We will met at Naza shops at 3.00 and our usual chit chats and towards to Al Badeyar for warm up and headed to Super Bowl and Iffar Bowl and retuned to Al Badeyer. It was an excellent track led by Yoghbear Sweep by BU Salem and rescue by Armin.
Entire drive was little challenging for me with lot off crests, technical medium and high dunes. I had few second rounds due to less momentum. Thanks Bu Salem & Armin for your guidelines.
Overall everyone did well n had lot of fun .

Here some pictures for the drive:-

Instead of having a reluxed afternoon after morning sleek drive i got a lucky chance to be part of this hunt as Sacha'passenger.
So there the thrill started. Bear was furious speedy and greedy to give hunters an easy time. I catch the front handle in the car and felt fully involved into the run wishing one day be closer half way to the performance i saw from you guys! Impressive team work on rescue situations. Thank you BuSalem for " putting my mind in trouble" . Sacha your car is a piece of art. Awaiting to ser you all soon. R
