When I read the title of today's trip, I understood it to be tips on how to drive the dunes. At the brief given by @alshamsi_m it was clarified we would be reaching the tips of all the big dunes today! Hence Dunes Tips! Our meet point was 10km south of Madam off the E55 at 2pm. The cooler weather allows an earlier start which is great. We would drive approximately North West reaching Al Badayer by sunset.
Eleven cars set off at 2 30pm, @alshamsi_m leading in the FJ and @Hockey doing sweep. There was no warm up. Straight into the technical dunes at speed and climbing the first big dune of many. To my surprise the convoy moved as one. Progress was excellent. Apparently Sweihan noon the previous week brought up standards somewhat! The crests were sharp. The sand soft. On the first break some 20 minutes later many drivers were having a sneaky deflate for added traction!
We we set off again towards Sony Ericson and I was amazed we still moved so efficiently. Unfortunately @ginger forgot his usual mandarin oranges for the trip. Instead he brought nuts. As a result of eating a tub on the first break he started "monkeying" around! He found the smallest bowl on the top of the biggest dune and parked up! It took great effort for our leader to get his FJ back up to rescue him. Unfortunately @ginger continued eating nuts and the "monkey" in him returned occasionally. I shall pack oranges for his next trip!!
We switched from Safari style to side cresting. Maybe as a result of excess deflation or poor style we now started seeing a couple of pop outs. All fixed with great speed. No one was frustrated......just a whole lot of love and peace! Right @momo! As the dunes were now considerably bigger and we stuck to the title tackling all the peaks there were now occasions where it was just myself, @alshamsi_m and @MarkB waiting on the group. In fairness everyone did real well. A great intermediate standard of drivers today. The strongest group I have driven with. Safe distance was kept. @Eric wasn't looking over his shoulder for @Yoghybear!!! Good operation of the Radio too.
In no time we were approaching Super Bowl. Being a Friday it was starting to get busy. Everything was on show. V8 Sand Rails. Modified trucks. Quads. Turbo charged 4x4's. Great to watch. Unwise to get involved with. There are no rules out there. Continuing onto Badayer we helped out a Chinese driver stuck on a crest. Shortly later a Hummer had overheated leaving the tourists stranded. @Hockey got them going again.
Reaching Badayer we split up. Some went to Big Red to watch more madness. I came home to my dog! A successful trip. Only damage being a cut tire. Those FJ's seem to love eating rubber!! Thanks to all for participating and keeping it professional but fun. Sorry for the quality of my photos. I use only my phone. Time to get the camera out of its box. Please everyone remember to bring oranges for @ginger next trip!
