Dune Raiders...(opening report title differs slightly!) Last trip of the summer season I guess as the weather cools and we soon start the glorious winter season.

Start point Al Badayer shops. Meet 6.30am and set off sharp at 7am. That was the plan and we had a positive start as firstly the role call showed everyone turned up and secondly we actually were all ready and set off as scheduled! Yoghybear would have been proud! Swiss time keeping without the Swiss time keeper!!

Strawb give a short but to the point brief. Get from Al Badayer to Pink Rock and back for 10am. Practice a little side cresting, keep 20m space and don't worry about a little "stuck" here or there as it would be good practice on the smaller technical dunes rather than up the side if a large dune a few drives later on. He was supported by Mazaaj and Rashidjass. Paul also tacked along for support from Advanced class.

Four drivers (me included) were plucked out from the wait list to make the convoy 14 cars. Many thanks for letting us join.

We set off and within 300m of the shops we had a pop out! A bad start I thought, as we were still on the relatively hard track but a small side crest caught out the H2 hummer. This was followed by a poor attempt to reset the tyre back on the wheel as the car was not positioned on flat ground so once jacked it slid off to one side, thankfully slowly so no on got hurt. Moving the car 10 feet forward would have eliminated this problem to start with as the track was flat there. But this is how we learn!

So having lost 20 minutes we crossed the Hatta road and set off toward Pink Rock. I was second lead and found that the pace we were setting was a little fast for the convoy as we were asked many times to slow down, occasionally stopping completely. It had rained recently so the sand was not too soft but some of the crests could catch you out. Indeed we had quite a few second attempts both outbound to Pink Rock and again inbound to the shops. All in all, we averaged just over 10km/hr though we did make it back before 10am.

This convoy was +5 drives, so over the 14 cars there was a wide spread of skill and experience. Those with just the 5 drives or a little above did very well but the +10 drivers and above were left unchallenged. Mazaaj and Rashid did very well calling from the rear to make sure the convoy didn't get too spread apart. It just seemed to me up front that once the pace started again we were having to slow yet again, or worse yet stop.

Still, when ever I got out of my car I could only see smiling faces so it was clear everyone was happy just to be there out driving and having fun. And with that extra drive under their belt I believe the pace will be that bit quicker next drive!

Thanks to all who smiled and made it a pleasant morning. It was an early start but that didn't bother anyone. Until next time, take care.

For me it was the 1st return to the sand after summer (to be more precise after the Grand Iftar) and I had few 'butterflies in the stomach' on the approach to Badayer shops. I took the advantage of summer break to install a skid plate (thanks to Strawb for the connection) and change the tires (thanks to al_shamsi for great advice), so I hoped that these little improvements to the car would compensate for my rustic skills. At the meeting point Strawb further announced that we would go in the direction of the Pink Rock (due to the convoy size), which made me feel even better as that area is less challenging than the opposite across the road from the shops. Just few minutes into the drive we had a pop-out. I guess no driver's fault because Kimoz was escaping the bare barb wire which happened to be on the way. After we finally moved into the dunes, I was so pleasantly surprised with the new tires. It felt like driving completely different car. Initially I was the third car behind Dave, but Strawb asked Desert Bat to move in between us. As it normally happens you need to adjust a bit for the driving style of the driver ahead of you and correct your speed/distance as necessary. I did not and came unnecessary close which led to a stuck as a result. First it felt that I would just need a second try, but things were a bit more serious, so I had to press all the buttons available on the FJ's panel and with the supervision from RashidJass recovered myself pretty quickly. In fact I was surprised with the quality of the drive before therest break as there were very few hiccups. This was not surprising as most people in the convoy were about 10 drives or over. After the break and sharp descent and rapid climb at Pink Rock we started to move back to Big Red. At that point in time I got into a nice driving groove and was really enjoying my time. Way back was a bit slower, maybe because drivers started to feel a bit tired, but overall the pace was still ok. We finished the drive with a descent from Big Red. As I said to Strawb at the end this drive was exactly what I needed after the 2.5 month break - not too easy and not too difficult! Now with summer almost over, I hope to drive more! Thanks to all of the drive participants and organizers.

Dave, I like your reports so much, but pls let me to translate it into pure English... and I hope that somebody from Marshals is reading this as well.

I'm very happy to read this, as earlier we were announcing, "I will start driving on time, even if there is no car behind me." So this works.
Strawb give a short but to the point brief. Get from Al Badayer to Pink Rock and back for 10am. Sounds like a good practise, introduced earlier, and I hope, helpful for the drivers... briefing on the targets for the drive.

Why it took 20 minutes? Wasn't there any Marshal or senior driver around?? The intention for the drive is to drive and not to loose the time waiting...

You're completely right. There are worlds even between 4+ and 6+. Driving a convoy with such a mix is just to make a point in the archive "we did another drive", it does not help anybody. The convoy should be split or some drivers shouldn't be allowed, and could accompany the convoy aka, "you can drive behind the convoy at your own risk". Off course if in trouble Marshals would help them... But still the main convoy would fulfill the target, "build up your skills".

An early start to the day... started off from home when there was no sunlight and saw the sunrise while on the way, it was surely a pleasant view.

As instructed, all drivers were at the meeting point on time and deflated. The excitement of the drivers could be felt as everyone tried to get their cars ready as fast as they could to start the drive.

6:50am all drivers were called for the attendance and briefing and off we were into our favorite place - THE SANDS :pacman:

As mentioned by Strawb, we will start a little slow as a warm up and then pick the pace. "it will be a roller coaster ride with a lot of practice on side slopings"

With various levels of drivers in this convoy the drive was very smooth, a few second rounds but that's part of the game. NO STUCKS:thumbsup:

Sincere apologies to all drivers of this convoy as I had a problem with the bed cover on my truck twice for which the convoy was a little delayed :TT TT:.

Thank you Mazaaj for helping me out

As planned and advised by Strawb in the briefing, we were at the Badayer shop by10ish.

Thank you strawb for an excellent lead, @Rashidjaas and Paul as the rescure team, Mazaaj as sweep and all the drivers of the convoy for making the weekend enjoyable.
alshamsi_m we all missed you this week and ur comments over the radio:pacman:

Pics of the drive will be uploaded soon.

Tc and have fun till next time

*PS: dont forget to glue your eyes to the forums... I am sure you wouldn't want to miss a spot when a drive is announced. Keep the eyes wide open:slow:

Hello everybody,

A lot was said previously in the report. For me, I noticed that the early morning trips requires discipline. As I needed to remove all non useful items inside my car the night before, I also checked everything to make sure all recovery tools are in good shape and works well. Tires pressure also checked to make it comfortable high way drive in the morning. All the electronic gadgets charged. Then I slept early with peace of mind.

Once I hit the road in the morning, I stopped in petrol station to have breakfast and buy extra water, I pointed to the cashier a pack of 12 water bottle, I told him "do you have a pack of 6?" He said "Sir it is coming only 12" I said "ok I take one". He told me then, if I buy one famous soft drink M.......n D..w I'll get the water for free. I said ok good deal, at 5:45am all deals sounds good. I placed the soft drink on the counter and waited for the water, and there he placed one small water bottle beside my soft drink. :you're kidding, rig It took me then 60 seconds to explain to the cashier that I need the pack of 12 and buy the soft drink too... :XD:

Nevertheless, I reached Al Badayer on time, and was happy to meet allmosters and the good occasion to see Dave.

I have not much to add to what was said, only at the small bowl, I lost distance between me and the car in front. When that happened, it is difficult to estimate the convoy pace and so the distance become bigger and bigger, at the time I was communicating on radio the situation and Lost the track. I found my self on a parallel track then Rashidjass appeared just behind me, at that moment I felt the almost4x4 power . I made the way clear to Rashidjass and he reconnected the convoy in an impressive way raiding the dunes in a straight line.

The drive ended well, all drivers safe and happy.

On the way back to Dubai I stopped by a car wash, my car as well as the workers got some refreshment and I ended up with a pack of 6 bottles of water. :whisper:

I let you check some pictures here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 2369d74422

I will post a video during this week

Cheers

Firstly I would like to thank Strawb for choosing that track as we were enjoying the side cresting and the rollercoaster drive. Also great thanks to Mazaaj (for sweeping), Rashidjass and Pole (for Rescuing).

It was an early morning as I woke up by 4:30am to prepare the car since there was a big mess inside :P. I thought that if I took it with that condition in the sand; 100% I would found many things flying over my head :P :P. After that, I headed to the petrol station to full the H3’s tummy and then directly to Badayer. I reached there by 6:25am, so I was glad to be the second car after Mark B reaching to the meeting point. I deflated and fixed the flag pole. Afterward, we had the drive’s introductory meeting which gave me a feeling that the drive will be very interesting especially after hearing that there will be rollercoaster drive and side cresting. It was also announced by strawb that this trip would be the last trip before the winter. At the end of the meeting Strawb was making sure that everybody was having the right tools and he was thinking to make tools inspection.

I jumped in the H3 and lined up in the queue, I found myself the third car after the lead (Strawb) and second lead (Dave). The drive has started, and everybody was excited but suddenly I had a pop out as I made a sharp turn after descending a dune in order to avoid stepping over razor wire and concrete block which were on the sand. I felt that everybody wana send me back home as it was at the beginning of the drive. So we recovered that pop out .. btw special thanks for Rashidjass and Mazaaj for helping in the recovery. After that, I jumped again in the car and continued the drive. I felt a bit down.. but I told myself “nobody is learning without making mistakes .. Let’s forget what happened and enjoy the drive”. So I continued the drive and with time my morale was up again :D. I was the 5th car in the convoy and everything was going smoothly. We drove from Badayer to the pink rock, we had a great dive and climb at the pink rock …. Really it was amazing. In our way back I had to have a second try to cross a dune as I was not having enough momentum due to a sudden stop. Then we stopped and had a break just before Badayer. In that breaks we had a nice Chitchat with each other and took plenty of photos together. I didn’t know that we are at the end of the drive, so I checked the tires pressure and re-deflated them, So I was laughing when I found myself reaching the tarmac (Badayer) just after the stop. lol

Over all it was a pleasant morning full of action and excitement, and I felt that it was a refreshing drive as it is the second one after the vacation. The drive was 32.5 Km and took us 2 hours and 46 minutes including the stops. Please find the Statistics below.

It's always good to start early
Many drivers are in the favor of starting next trips @ 7:00 AM although the sunrise will be at 7:00 AM in Dec. and Jan.
No delay.. started @ 7:00 AM exactly
Pop-Out good morning was fixed and we headed toward the pink Rock
As advised by Strawb, I had the advantage to be the third car after him and Dave so I could adjust my speed according to their, and follow their track closely
Few hundred meters before the pink rock I was driving on 2 gear and I felt no power in the my FJ, shifted to L gear but I was loosing the power very fast
I suspected that I have a pop-out, announced on the radio I'm loosing power and I drove left-down with the gravity, stopped, got out, checked the tires, front left tire was down
Not pop-out but lost pressure
Rashidjass -as always- was there for recovery, Paul reached me at once also, with Rashijass X-Terra back fixed air compressor, there was no need for mine
Continue to the pink rock and back to the big red with no major issues in the convoy
As everyone noticed and mentioned the convoy with 14+4 cars was a bit slow, but everyone specially the drivers who were on the maybe list were happy to join the drive (ask me)
Big thank to Strawb, Mazaaj, Rashijass and Paul, and thank you all for the nice company
See you soon in the sands

There report looks pretty complete and it was a "Fantastic Drive", best way to describe it. Just like (orlantsev) its my first drive after a long holiday and I was also plucked out from the list as Dave mentioned.

I was 2nd to the last car in the convoy and watching every car conquering the dunes put a smile on my face and I am sure that I am not the only one who noticed this because everyone was smiling:grin:on breaks, everyone looks HAPPY!!!

This is one of the calm and controlled (not hard not easy) convoy that I have been and was well organised by this combination strawb (lead) Mazaaj (Sweeper) @Rashidjaas Paul (rescue team). Even though there were few 2nd tries, "NO ONE GOT STUCK" (from memory) :want !:

Happy Reads! Cheers!
