Usually at this point in a thread someone jumps in and says "just sell your FJ and buy a Jeep". Im surprised it hasn't happened yet lol :)
Actually, you can sell the FJ, buy 4 cherokees, and install all the different recommended tyres and have cash to spare..1 for the road, 1 for the sand, 1 for wadi's and one for the heck of it!! :011:

I have an FJ and just bought the Cooper H/T 265/75R16 but haven't actually used the car yet (picking it up today!).
I bought them directly from the Dubai dealer, paid 510 AED / each, including fitting and balancing (yes, 2012 ones!):
RENAISSANCE TYRE TRADING CENTRE
04 266 9166
Coordinates: 25°16'25"N 55°20'46"E
I think they had other brands but might have been for trucks... I didn't ask... Apart from that, they were lovely.
I had earlier the BFG M/T on my FJ... run almost 90,000kms... and it worked fairly well... but as the thread is a little aggressive it tends to dig into the sand when you are on soft sands... so then you will have to air it down to 6-8 psi... but then fear of pop-out
I have recently switched to Cooper HT.... and it performs much better than the BFG... great handling on road and on sand...
But as they say... it all depends on the driver what he is comfortable with... Every drive will have his own story on tires as per their driving skills...
For me... my vote goes to Cooper HT
Hi Shawn,
What do you recommend for a newcomer. I have the stock Dunlops and should shed them say in 25K???

so, I have tried the Cooper H/T before, they were great, then got a deal, 4 used Copper STT for free, thought why not try them, and now I went for Cooper AT3, stock size (265/75/16)
HT, great on road, bit smooth offroad, minimal grip, but no digging, definitely not suitable for rock crawling.
STT, NOISY (and I'm shouting while saying it), gives me a headache, affect the momentum of the car onroad and offroad, takes longer distance to brake with them, you will loose control if the tarmac is wet, they dig offroad, but the grip is amazing on the sand once you get used to them.
bottom line, not worth it for me as I do both onroad and offroad.
AT3, still very new to them, no noise (or at least compared to the STT), nice grip on the tarmac, got my momentum back in the FJ :) , offroad, well to early to give feedback, but they felt OK on the 1st trial.
Got the tyres from Ardh Al Emarat shop in Sharjah, where they had the club logo on the front window, their prices are good compared to the market.
Thanks everyone for sharing their experience, it helped a lot in the decision making process ;)

I wonder if this gripping thing was the issue I had yesterday. My car was going nowhere, had to constantly do loops to get up the crest, and when I would finally do, I'd get stuck at the top. I thought I was having engine issues, although it didn't sound as if I was. I just had no power at all...
I didn't seem to have this issue in Adrenaline / Liwa last week, although it seemed that I had a couple of psi less then... Perhaps I should drive the Cooper HTs with 8psi?:032:

Since the HT are smoother of the 3, they tends to spin more, that means not all the momentum in the car is transferred to movement on the ground, the car feels weak, but actually the grip is low.
driving on low psi is usually depends on the car weight and driving style, be careful when side sloping or side cresting as the risk of pop out are higher.
