Catch Me If You Can XII
Welcome to the land of Capriland. Westarted on the north face of Fossil Rock where mother nature haslightly deposited sand in a nice fluffy blanket. So much soft sandmixed with rocks (tire eating rocks). All to get us to the The dropat Fossil Rock. Actually the drop was much easier having done it ona previous convoy.
Catch me if you can is just that. Thelead Marshal driving like his hair is on fire and the rest of ustrying to keep pace. At the speed we were going and the fact thatStrawb loves the top of dunes, a few pop outs were inevitable. @Defragmentor did a great job in not climbing on top of a rockoutcropping. That same outcropping ate one of [MENTION=1864]strawb[/MENTION] reartires.
The world came back into balance when@MOMO happen to crest, right in front of my GoPro. Momo, looks likeI have some currency to trade for those pictures you took of mycresting a few trips back.
Strawb cut a fast and technical tripheading towards Big Red. He tested each Newby in turn with the restof us following. Strawb brought us to Dave's Dune. 3 rounds up andalong the crest till we reach the high point, then full throttle downinto the bottom of the dune and launch into orbit coming out theother side. Great fun.
We finished up at the top (then thebottom of Big Red) then a final group picture.

I totally agree I was too far at this part of the drive, but at the beginning our convoy was stretching then after your briefing it went well. I wanted to make the video into two parts the first one around fossil rock and the other part would be much better in term of convoy skills. I will upload it later.
By the way, talking about distance problem. Just a remark to all fellow drivers, because I see it again and again in mostly all our drives. Let's stick to our convoy rules. If you start to see the car behind you losing distance or you see it very far or you don't see it at all, please grab your radio and communicate it to the leader so that he can adjust his speed. Let's analyse my situation on the video. I lost distance between me and the car in front, i might be a slow driver or it could be any other reason. I cannot estimate anymore the pace of the drive. As we lost a lot of time at the beginning i decided not to stop completely and say i lost totally the convoy, because the track is clear and we are newbies 10+, but not having marshal experience yet, I kept driving at a normal speed thinking not risking the cars following me. And my both hands on the steering focusing on the track more than anything else. Let's imagine that I could grab the radio to report situation but i didn't, sure it is a mistake. But what if i did it but the leader didn't heared it because of device problem. Who to blame in this case?

hi momo. Distance is critical in convoy driving as this will directly effect the experience of the drivers behind you. In this case it was "catch me if you can" wherein the convoy should be trying to catch the leading marshal. Taking safety into account at all times, drivers need to understand proper distancing in both approach and descent of the dunes to ensure you dont drive to close or too far from the car infront of you
in your video, it is clear you can see the car infront of you from a distance. It would have been best to catch up on flat ground and practice safety on the ascent and the descent in dunes. Radio communication is a must but as a 10+ driver you would have had the skills to accelerate on flat areas to make up ground you lost. This should be practiced at all levels because once this becomes a habit, you take away the opportunity of the driver behind you to experience the level which is being taken by the leading marshal.
Drivers should as always observe the cars infront of them in terms of acceleration, momentum, reaction to soft sand, etc etc.
the marshals sacrifice and risk their cars by leading at a certain speed to share the knowledge and experience to the drivers who wish to progress their desert driving skills. It would be best if all of the drivers in the convoy understand the same so everyone would benefit from the experience
