Hi, Claus. Good to see you here. I remember last we rode together you were using your iPad. Problem for me is I'm cheap and I don't have any use for 3G service except for the tablet's gps. Is there a way to use the tablet without having to pay Etisalat? How does the standard Gamin unit accomplish this?

I have used my IPAD w. 3G for navigation purposes for some time. The best APP I have found is "Motion X GPS HD". It' around 10 AED and allows you to download terrain maps for the entire world for free. It also includes all imaginable functionalities incl. Track recording. You can program waypoints in any format. Very easy to use. Sharaf DG in Times Sq Mall have a number of mounting solutions for IPADs.
Kind regards

Hi guysJust looked at the Motion X GPS. The write up looks good.It says there is a map download for off line use. This should allow you to download the map and use it in the memory of the device. The only reason you need 3G is to avoid downloading the map. It updates as you move and zoom in.The iPhone does use the mobile network to assist in 'finding' itself quicker. It does have a gps in it and will work without any mobile or 3G access.Going to download MotionX today. Will report back. Sounds good.RegardsPaul

If you use mac then its a single click with redsnow,:003: but if its windows & doors ,its fairly easy...
The issue iam facing with Motion X is the download zoom area, it says 6-10 gb as we zoom in...?

I'm unable to find a proper route for any location while testing... It looks amazing though for offroad as it records my track while on the move.
I downloaded uae map but with a max zoom of 14 i guess and the file was arounf 300 megs, higher zoom goes into gigs.

I use my 3G iPad all the time - in fact during xplore UAE after the wadi we ended up getting lost in the desert with the big MRAP so I used google maps w/ satellite image and used that to get to the red bull tent before the last leg to shj.

I've been using my Nokia mobile as GPS for long time in the desert! I even used it for previous desert challenge with no support of any other GPS device and I think it did well even better that other GPS devices in the challenge!
The program that I was using is
Viewranger you can check it on youtube and you can use it on/offline and the only thing you have to browse the area that you will hit at home before going out! and it's offering more than 9 types of maps
The program is available at android market and free as I guess (you only have to pay if you will download maps to save it for only 3 countries England-UAS-Canada as I remember, but this option is not supported for other countries).
If you want to use it without internet you have to buy tablet with GPS chip which I think will be available and reliable at all new tablets.
also with this program you can save your buddies and find them easily and your family can find you over the website if you get lost :018:
Check their web site

Hi again. The IPAD doesn't need to use the 3G when navigating, but only the 3G version has the GPS chip built in.
