Hi Ginger, last time I went was I think October last year. It was fine. I have Russian passport. I also used another crossing I think in 2014 - also no problem. My only advice is try not to be there on public holiday. In October I travelled to Wahiba to drive with friends and it was a holiday in UAE, so it was long waiting time.

Thanks I crossed last year as well.
However currently it's being reported " Avoid Al Madheef checkpoint (Al Ain/Buraimi border) as well as Al Hili border as these are only open to GCC nationals" from Gulf News http://gulfnews.com/guides/tourists/al- ... -1.1648517
I just wondered if anyone had first-hand experience of these changes, as I really want to climb Jebel Shams (and the obvious way is via Al Ain) ?

Yes they'll send you back and guide you to another longer road within UAE borders down to hatta through Shj mountains road...

Hey all,
Please be informed that in Al Ain there are 4 UAE-Oman Border check points which are Al Hilli Checkpoint, Al Madheef Checkpoint, Khatm al shakla Checkpoint and Mazyad check point. Khatm al shakla and Mazyad check points are open for Expats. On the other hand, Al Madheef check points is only for GCC. Regarding al Hilli Checkpoint; it was previously opened for expats, but currently Im not sure.

During the last UAE National day in 2nd Dec 2015, I went to Oman from Khatmt Al Mellaha Check point. Because I live in Fujairah so the border is just 15 km away from home (border is Kalba side of UAE).
Usually this border is quite and smooth. I was surprised of the amount of expat people waiting in queue. When I asked I found out that Al Ain and Hatta borders are not accepting expat to cross. I am planning to cross to Salalah this eid on July, hopefully it will be smooth.
